    There are several benefits to user experience design, and I’ll list some of them. Before I begin, a quick note: user experience design to me encompasses EVERYTHING, from UI design to customer support processes to retail store design and packaging. So when I speak of “user experience” I’m thinking about any touch point a user can have with a company.

    Increased customer satisfaction. The better experience you create for your customers, the happier they will. And the opposite is also true: the worse experience you provide to your customers they will become more and more frustrated with what you are providing them… And they will be far less likely to recommend your offering to friends and families. And dissatisfied customers call to complain, which means when you provide a good experience you also have…

    Reduced cost of ownership and support. If you produce a product (hardware or software) that has an easy-to-learn (and easy-to-use) design, you will have to support that product less. Good design also reduces your total “cost of ownership”, in that you will need less documentation, a smaller support staff, and less salespeople. Which brings us to…

    Increased sales. Happy users share their happiness with their circle of friends and family. They also review your offering online. Providing a good experience helps build positive word of mouth, and increases sales. It also often results in increased customer loyalty and therefore repeat business.

    Good karma. OK, this one is not really a measurable benefit, but I think that if you create something that helps people do something well and makes thier lives better then you will benefit from that effort. Case in point: One of my first major successes in user experience design was the creation of a streamlined process to sign up for electronic bills. This process resulted in a huge “hockey stick” uplift in adoption, which in turn meant a lot less trees were destroyed to print paper bills. My company did well, it had a positive environmental impact, and the success helped my career. Win, win, and win.

    Visual design is the actual face of your brand. It’s what people see, and that directly influences how customers and clients think of your company. However, you can’t have a visual design without a plan. This is where UX comes in.

    Let’s make things clear, UX Design is part of the design process. However, UX is more focused on the overall experience than just the look of the site. UX is the skeleton to your body. UX is the reason why you can’t just make a website. You need to do a ton of research and planning to figure out what you need, where things should go, and what it should say. This planning is important for a number of reasons.

    UX is really important. You ask why?

    1. UX will help to discover your goal and audience. A lot of research goes into UX design and during the process, you will get a lot of opinions. These will shape your site design goals.With your goals in mind, you should research your customer base by creating personas. Ask yourself who will most likely visit your site and once you figure this out, you will be on the path to providing a good user experience. The idea is to make sure you can make these personas happy.
    2. It helps you save money and make money. By doing the research and planning, you can create a website that works for both your customers and organization. If you know your customers, create engaging content, and provide a good service, everything should fall into place. When this happens, you will get a big return on all of the time and effort that went into building your site.
    3. User Experience Touches the Product Itself, Not Just the Promotion of It. There is a fundamental difference between digital marketing and user experience, and it really boils down to this: marketing is about making people want things. The design is about making things that people want.
    4. User Experience Uses Multiple Research Approaches. Digital marketing typically doesn’t generate much in the way of research. Marketing research tends to be focused more on quantifying a known market, for a fixed product. On the contrast, UX is an intensive research focused on discipline, that is naturally focused on discovering and understanding real human needs that can be solved for with a well-designed product.

    To a large degree the quality of a user experience can make all the difference in whether a company succeeds or fails. Think of the companies that have failed in the last decade; Yahoo, MySpace, etc… it wasn’t only due to disruption or technological advances; but also because they failed to continue to consider the user’s needs.

    For example, Yahoo added a bunch of clutter on their homepage instead of allowing people to complete simple tasks like simply search or check their emails. MySpace gave too much leeway to user’s in editing their pages, along with the overabundance of ads, and just plain needless pagination.

    But to get back to your question; What are the benefits of user experience design?

    -Satisfied and happy users. People fall in love with experiences, not with the technology behind it. Blackberry, Nokia, and many other companies are finding this out the hard way. For example, when a user visits a site they rarely think about the IA of the site or how you’ve cleverly used AJAX to infinitely display results.

    -Your team can work on more pertinent issues, because they are not weighed down by responding to user’s that need help with the easiest of tasks that wasn’t designed with them (users) in mind.

    -The absolute best marketing. A user that falls in love with the experience your site/app brings them will most definitely share it with a friend. No amount of other marketing can compare to that. Think of Netflix. A little over 80% of their marketing comes from word of mouth and people evangelizing the service. This isn’t by accident. Netflix goes to great lengths to provide both a compelling user and customer experience.

    In general UX practices allow for a product/service team to do the following:

    • Gain empathy for the people who’ll be using their designs.
    • Understand the capabilities and limitations of humans generally and your target audience more specifically.
    • Understand the cultural, behavioral modes of your audience so that your designs fit existing behaviors or maps against existing behaviors so that changes in culture and behavior feel more natural.
    • Solutions are validated with people who will be involved.
    • Gain consensus from stakeholders and end-users.
    • Build off of existing vetted patterns of UI towards creating efficiencies in design decision making.
    • Connect the various elements of user experience (ala Jesse James Garrett) across touchpoints, channels, experience avatars, and experience containers so that people have a clear, coherent and where appropriate consistent experience.

    I’m sure there are more, but that’s what I see are the big ones at this point. Notice that I only made the reference to UI once and never mentioned IxD, IA, HCI, or usability at all.

    If your goal of your website is for the user to make a purchase, and they cannot find what they are looking for; then your bad user experience has resulted in a lost sale.

    A good user experience will allow the user to seamlessly navigate through the website or mobile application, and find what they are looking for, whether it be a product, service or an answer to their question.

    The thing is, you can’t not participate in User Experience (UX) design. If you have a product, be it app, or website, or whatever, that people use, then you have designed a UX.

    Now, the time, energy, and talent that you dedicate to UX design is another thing entirely. You can dedicate little-to-no time, energy, and talent, and you can have Craigslist. It’s still popular and useful, but its UX is, in general, not good.

    What a lot of big companies (Google among them) are starting to realize is something Apple figured out decades ago: what something does is important, but how it does it is just as, if not more, important.

    People want to use good-looking, intuitive interfaces that don’t get in their way. Providing them with that requires dedicating time, energy, and talent to good UX design.

    As well as leading to better products I strongly believe UXD leads to better projects too. UXD has a natural process around which projects can coalesce. So less time and money is wasted throwing away code that was written without a clear purpose. Less time and money wasted building features that don’t matter. Less time and money wasted fixing avoidable errors. Less time and money wasted on badly scoped, badly structured, meandering projects.
